We were heading on a cruise which was departing Reykjavik and destined for other ports in Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Norway.
We decided to arrive a few days early to enjoy Reykjavik and everything it has to offer, not to mention anticipating the need to deal with jet lag and general travel fatigue.
We flew Delta Airlines out of JFK and arrived around 9AM Reykjavik time after an overnight flight. After waiting a fair amount of time for our luggage, we were greeted by the limo service we had pre-booked and were transferred to out boutique hotel in Reykjavik. The drive from Keflavik Airport to the 101 Hotel in Reykjavik took about 50 minutes in light traffic that time of day.
The 101 Hotel in Reykjavik advertises itself as a sleek boutique hotel set in a former office block on a busy corner of downtown. It was a perfect location for three days of sightseeing in and around Reykjavik and was within walking distance of several prominent must-do sights and also close to many restaurants, bars and shops.
As an example, it’s about a 15-minute walk from the hotel to Hallgrimskirja Church. It is a bit uphill on the way, but of course, you get that elevation back on your return if you make the walk a roundtrip. Most of the walk is pedestrian friendly, with restaurants, bars and shops along the way. A walk in the sun is also great way to deal with jet lag as well as enjoying what the heart of Reykjavik has to offer.
Rainbow Street is along the way and is a scenic place to stop on a beautiful day.
