We enjoyed a spectacular trip to South Africa in 2011. We visited Johannesburg, taking in city and urban sights, enjoyed a few diversions with hot air balloons, lions and elephants, and then spent some focused time at Sabi Sands Game preserve enjoying wildlife sightings and truly wonderful hospitality.

Our journey took us from Chicago’s O’hare airport and through London’s Heathrow, before arriving in Johannesburg, South Africa. It was pretty much a 24 hour effort to get to our destination – but well worth it.

Our stay began at The Westcliff (now the Four Seasons Westcliff) in Johannesburg and we made this the center of our city visit planning all day trips from this wonderful, full-service hotel. The concierge team at the Westcliff made the Johannesburg part of the trip fairly easy and straightforward.

One of our first sight seeing forays was to the Rosebank African Craft Market, not too far from the hotel and a great place to start a trip to South Africa.

One excursion from Johannesburg was a visit to Colin’s Horseback Africa for a Walk with Lions. This is an educational and rewarding experience that allows you to learn about lion conservancy and also to interact with and “walk with lions”. I’d recommend this experience to anyone interested in wildlife conservation.

Once on the actual safari, we stayed 4 nights at the Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge and 4 nights at the Sabi Sabi Selati Camp.
